In it's intent and in it's music, this may be the most humane album we offer. It's message is one of peace and hope that asks us to listen to the voices of the world's mothers, even the ones from counties in conflict with our own. It reminds us that there are babies, women, and children living in the so-called Axis of Evil. Women who sing lullabies to their babies.
Producer Erik Hillestad pairs singers from around the world singing in English with the traditional lullabies sung by a host of singers from Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Syria, Cuba and North Korea. Pleasantly devoid of stereotypical lullaby arrangements and overproduction, the collection of lullabies on this CD shuns the saccharin and keeps the compositions spare and focused on the song. The album is made more poignant by the producer's notes, which describe illegally recording women's voices in Iran and a tricky visit to a pre-war Iraq.
Politics aside, this is an album of lullabies. Rich with world rhythms and languages, it's a beautiful album to listen to. A mother's lullaby truly transcends languages and nations and makes it clear that entire nations cannot be evil. Wherever mothers and fathers love their babies is hallowed ground.
